The following tools can be used to manage link building campaigns, they find, track, audit, verify and assist with outbound link requests.
Advanced Link Manager Helps manage link building campaigns, monitors link profiles and find link opportunities.
Ahrefs Large index of links updated daily, friendly interface with data analysis. The tool shows links (including new and internal), linking domains, anchors and best pages of a domain.
Buzzstream – Outreach management and link prospect tool, pulls publisher and influencer information as well as website stats and social metrics. Determines which websites are most authoritative and who’s promoted your web pages in the past. Offers a free link building guide.
Citation Labs Offers two (2) link building tools, Link Prospector and the Broken Link Tool. Link Prospector – searches for and returns potential partner sites based on provided criteria. Great for finding sources to host your content. Broken Link Builder – discovers broken link prospects based on your keywords.
Link-Assistant This link prospecting tool looks for partners by keyword, for link submission forms, and for sites that link to your competitors. It qualifies prospects to determine the quality of each, finds contact information on each site and offers personalized email templates.
Linkody – Know when you gain or lose links, shows competitors backlink profiles, identifies “bad” links, integrates with Moz, Google Analytics, highlights no follow and redirected links.
Link Research Tools – While there are 24 SEO and link building tools in this toolbox, 22 of them are directly related to link building. The Link Detox (shows risky links), SERP Prospector and Competitive Link Velocity (measures link growth) are three standouts.
Majestic SEO – This toolset has the largest link index/database available and is considered a staple in most SEO’s toolbox. Site Explorer and Backlink History tool (shows backlink discovery by month) and Clique Hunter (shows who are linking to your competitors) are three standout link building tools and part of the overall SEO tool package. A handful of tools free with registration, monthly and annual rates for rest.
Ontolo – Collects organizes and prospects for content sources, integrates with Majestic, Ahrefs, and Moz. Good video tutorials and general link building articles available.
RankTank – This is a repository of user-generated SEO tools. The link category only has three tools but two of them, the Webmaster Tools Disavow File Builder and the Link Reclamation Tool stand out. Easy to use with how-to videos available.
SearchMetrics – While most of the premium features are better suited for enterprise-level accounts, this tool is a research option for small to mid-size businesses. Tool excels at backlink, competitor and rank tracking, also offers keyword research by country.
SEMRush – Their backlink checker shows all links pointing to your domain and their TLD. Part of the overall SEMrush suite of tools.
SEOJet – Link management software builds link maps based on data such as a number of links and anchor text profiles from high traffic sites.
SoloSEO Link Research Tool – Enter your targeted keyword above to create queries in Google, Bing, and Yahoo to find potential link building opportunities. Disclaimer: I (Debra Mastaler) contributed to the creation of the tool by providing a number of search strings. Free to use.
Supple Bookmarklet – Highlight nofollow, UGC and sponsored links with this free bookmarklet. Pull the orange “Highlight Links” box to your browser bar. No charge.
URL Profiler Backlink, social media, and content auditor returns anchor text information, integrates with Majestic and Ahrefs, pulls email addresses from web pages and checks. Video and written training.
Free Back Link Checkers
Bing Link Explorer – must have Microsoft account. Lists inbound links, can filter links by anchors and if internal/external.
Backlink Watch – Shows inbound links, no follow attributes, PageRank™ scores, and hypertext anchors.
Open Site Explorer – Backlink research, looks for link building opportunities and shows potentially damaging inbound links.
Rank Signals – the Backlink checker, shows PageRank™ score for a page checked, a number of unique inbound links, Alexa rank and anchor text used. Quick and clean-looking.
Broken/Link Checkers (Looks for dead links or reports new links)
Broken Link Check – Checks your web pages for dead links, shows the location of problematic links in your HTML, reports 404 error codes. Free for first 3000 web pages.
Broken Link Checker – Monitors pages on a blog and notifies you when broken links are found. Also sends an alert for missing images and redirects.
CheckMyLinks This Chrome extension crawls your web pages and looks for broken links.
Dead Link Checker – Set this crawler to go through your whole site or just a page or two to identify broken links.
Error404 – Check a webpage for broken links.
Xenu Link Sleuth – Yep, it’s still around and still a little scary looking. Link verification is done on “normal” links, images, frames, plug-ins, backgrounds, local image maps, style sheets, scripts and java applets. It displays a continuously updated list of URLs which you can sort by different criteria. A report can be produced at any time.
